Birding in Belize
Mariposa Jungle Lodge is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Each morning, an avian symphony obviates the need for an alarm clock, and provides excellent
birding opportunities. The sweet cooing of Mourning Doves, the noisy squawking of Green Parrots, the frog-like grunts of Keel Billed toucans, the gentle song of the trogon, are among the myriad sounds. Sparkling yellow Kiskadees and the magical Hummingbirds visit the office staff daily and perch right outside the windows.
But nothing excites our guests more than the easily-identifiable Keel-Billed Toucans with their extraordinary, disproportionate beaks.
To enhance the comfort, quiet, and opportunity of our bird lovers, we erected a bird watching tower in the jungle, where our guests can climb stairs to a 16 square foot deck, about 20 feet above the jungle ground, and comfortably enjoy a 360 degree view of an area replete with different trees, density, nests, and birdlife. Early morning bird watchers have been rewarded with as many as 15 of these tropical creatures flying by the birdwatching tower.
There are over 400 known bird species in the immediate geographical area that ranges from broadleaf forest to open agricultural land to the nearby Mountain Pine Ridge Forest. We enjoy a wide range of those species. For a list of bird species identified onsite, click here.
